The Wellness Institute is proud to support the Food Access Bus (FAB), a vital new pilot project helping seniors in our Seven Oaks community access fresh, affordable groceries with ease.
For many seniors, the simple act of grocery shopping can be a significant challenge. Barriers like limited transportation, rising costs, mobility concerns, and the isolation of the winter months can make it difficult to maintain a healthy, nutritious diet. The Food Access Bus was designed to remove these hurdles by providing free, reliable monthly transportation directly from 55+ apartment complexes in Old Kildonan to local grocery stores like FreshCo.
Why it Matters
Nutrition is a cornerstone of health, but “food accessibility” is about more than just what’s on the shelves—it’s about the ability to get there safely and with dignity.
- Independence: The program allows seniors to shop for themselves, fostering a sense of autonomy.
- Mental Well-being: Beyond the shopping, the bus has become a social hub, reducing isolation and building camaraderie among neighbours.
- Physical Health: Access to fresh produce and whole foods is essential for managing chronic conditions and maintaining quality of life.
Our Support
As a leader in community health, the Wellness Institute (WI) has been an active partner in this initiative alongside City Councillor Devi Sharma, the Seven Oaks Neighbourhood Resource Network, and the Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre. Our involvement included:
- Strategic Planning: Outreach Coordinator Amy Yonda represented the WI on the organizing committee.
- Advocacy: Providing formal letters of support to help secure project funding.
- On-the-Ground Help: WI staff and volunteers assist at the store on shopping days to ensure a smooth experience for every participant.
The FAB pilot project is a testament to what happens when community partners work together to lead positive change. We are thrilled to see our neighbours feeling “like royalty” as they stock their pantries and connect with their community.
