A Focus on Fun and Fitness
It was 20 years ago that Ed Globa’s knees began to suggest he should ease up on the running regimen he so loved. Today he remains fit and active thanks to the variety of high-calibre programs offered by the Wellness Institute.
Ed has been a member of Wellness since the facility opened in 199X. Back then, he was working in the school system, and he found his visits to Wellness to be a great stress reliever. “Coming to the gym was the best way to get the work day out of my system and have fun. When you are in the moment you aren’t thinking about anything except challenging yourself.”
Now 62 and retired, he takes advantage of a wide range of workout options. “The Wellness is a great place,” he says.
“I like that there is something for everyone. I’ve found that I may do different things at different times depending on my schedule, my current health or injury situation and my motivation level on the day. It’s great knowing I have the option to choose.”
He generally visits the facility three to five times per week. He takes advantage of the resistance and cardio machines, and also loves the social aspect of the group workouts, such as spinning (cycling), yoga, and aerobics and step classes – all of which are free for members.
He says it’s easy to try out a class because the instructors are so knowledgeable. “For example, yoga – the whole idea of how to stretch,” he says. “They are very good at directing you in proper poses so you gain maximum benefit, and you become more body aware.”
And the spin classes in particular, he says, are terrific. “The instructors are a lot of fun, there’s lots interaction – you spend 55 minutes on the bike doing a training ride and so you’ve worked hard, but you’ve had a blast.”
“For me, the instructors are a real draw,” he adds. “They have taught me a lot.”
All of our weekly group exercise classes are led by instructors certified by the Manitoba Fitness Council. This means they are happy to modify exercises to meet your individual needs, while ensuring you have a fun and effective workout.
